For more advanced hobbyist looking to add something interesting to your collection.

  • Pack Size: 10 springtails also includes Dormant Daywalker slime mold(Physarum Polycephalum Culture)
  • Not an effective clean up crew: These springtails only eat slime molds and require at least a weekly supply of fresh slime mold to thrive.
  • Perfect for small Terrariums: These critters thrive alongside other non slime eating springtails and require a high humidity enclosure.
  • Temperature requirements: 22–26 °C is optimal for them.

Ideal for:

  • Live plant Terrariums
  • Non planted containers with minimal to no ventilation to keep humidity in.  Accompanying by a forest floor substrate with leaf litter and cork bark hides for a natural environment

Rambutanura sp. Thai Red Spiky are larger in size than your average springtails and even some of the isopod species. They are reddish coral in colour and have soft spikes. They are slower-moving and don’t jump.

The Day walker slime mold also known as Physarum Polycephalum Culture needs to be activated.

To activate:

  • Prepare the substrate: Place your piece of dried sclerotium (the hard, dormant state) onto a clean, nutrient-free agar plate or a damp paper towel inside a shallow container.
  • Rehydrate gently: Use a clean pipette or spritzer to place exactly one drop of distilled or chlorine-free water directly onto the dried piece. Do not flood or oversaturate the sample.
  • Provide a food source: Place a single, fresh oat flake right next to the rehydrated sclerotium piece.
  • Store in the dark and wait: Cover your container with a lid and keep it in a dark or dimly lit location at room temperature (20–25°C) for 12 to 24 hours.
  • Check and adjust: If the slime mold does not show outward fan-like growth or movement within 24 hours, add just one more drop of water.
Ongoing Care for Day walker slime:
  • Feeding: Once the active plasmodium spreads and covers the first oat, introduce 2–3 fresh oat flakes daily, removing any old, moldy oats.
  • Moisture: Mist the container regularly to maintain high humidity without soaking the organism.
  • Light tolerance: Unlike standard wild strains that panic and turn into reproductive spores when exposed to light, the Day walker strain tolerates indirect and diffused daylight, making it exceptionally forgiving for desktop and classroom observation
  • Transfer: Set up a fresh container with damp paper towels or a plain agar plate and use a clean tool to transfer a section of active slime mold, best to take a piece that is currently consuming oat flake. Gently lift the slice and place it face-up onto the new substrate. Position a fresh, dry oat flake directly touching or right next to the transferred slime mold. Keep the new container in a dim, room-temperature spot. The edges should begin exploring within 2 to 4 hours.

Tips for success:

  • Keep it clean: Always wash your hands and wipe your tools with rubbing alcohol before transferring to prevent mold or bacterial contamination.
  • Avoid drowning: Ensure the new substrate is damp like a wrung-out sponge, but has no standing pools of water.
  • Manage growth: If you want to stop multiplying it, let the container dry out naturally in the dark, and it will return to a dormant, storable sclerotium state.
