Star Moss also known as Syntrichia ruralis or Tortula ruralis is a very resilient bryophyte. Known for its incredible desiccation tolerance, meaning it can completely survive periods of draught and bounce back within hours of receiving water. Forms lush, bright green cushions up to 4cm tall when fully hydrated. When dry, its leaves wrap tightly around stems and turn bronze in colour to prevent water loss. Not aquatic, but works really well as a terrarium moss and also works well in paludariums. This moss requires moderate to bright indirect light, avoid direct sunlight. Keep it damp, not waterlogged. It is best to use distilled, reverse osmosis or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup. Grows well on rocks, logs, coco fiber or well draining bioactive soil mixes.
