Botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward invented the terrarium. He placed a chrysalis of a sphinx moth in a bottle with damp soil, within a week plants began to sprout due to the moisture and condensation inside the container. George Loddiges used Ward's method to ship plants. The sealed, airtight Wardian cases allowed plants to thrive without ventilation, revolutionizing plant transportation.
