Description:
The Porcellio laevis Black are, as the name suggests, the wild type of the Porcellio Laevis – Dairy Cow isopods. They can grow larger than most isopods to around 2.4cm and share the trait of having a voracious appetite for protein-rich materials, such as shed reptile skin and left over food. They are active both in the day and in the night, slowly breaking down the organic matter, including plant debris and waste. Another great isopod species for a bioactive enclosure.
They are a very active, which makes for a very entertaining terrarium or enclosure and have a great feeding response. They, like the Dairy Cows, are also willing to take food directly from your hand, which makes them a fun species to interact with.
Care Requirements:
The Porcellio laevis Black is a great beginner friendly isopod to care for, they too can be very prolific and will enjoy a wide range of humidity. While they don’t mind the humidity that much, it is best to keep it above 70%. They do still require a low level of a moisture gradient, you can achieve this by watering one side of the enclosure or allow them to climb up something such as a plant in a terrarium. All round easy to care for, and love to eat, ensure proper feed and moisture is available and they will thrive.
Porcellio laevis Black play a vital role in maintaining a clean and healthy habitat, working alongside Springtails to manage waste and promote a balanced ecosystem for your reptiles and Terrariums.
