Description:
Porcellio bolivari Yellow Ghost’ is one of the most interesting isopod species in the terrarium hobby. They have a flat and broad physique which gives them a striking appearance. The basic color is a light white to cream with a striking yellow stripe down the middle.
The males appear larger as they have distinct elongated uropods(tail appendages).
They were discovered in the wild. Their original habitat is in the Spanish province of Alicante.
Keeping this species requires a little more attention than many other Isopods. It is particularly important to have good ventilation of the terrarium. They react sensitively to stale, musty air.
The Humidity should be kept relatively moderate and is ideally between 50 and 70 %. At the same time, a damp moss corner must be present. They regularly seek shelter there, especially during molting. With a proper breeding enclosure and moisture gradient with sufficient air exchange you can achieve this. Adding some extra climbing space like branches will provide a good spot for them to dry off after retreating back to a damp spot to remoisten their gills.
The main food sources are foliage and white rotten wood. The animals are also happy to eat vegetables, flowers, fruit or special isopod food.
With its unusual coloration, natural origin and interesting behavior, the Porcellio bolivari ‘Yellow Ghost’ is a particularly exciting species for ambitious isopod keepers and collectors.
